Sorry for leaving this one hanging, actually I got so frustrated I put Linux on it and it works great for surfing, sound also works fine. I just followed the gateway site as suond but probably a different order of driver installs. I have a paid for driver detective and that doesn’t work either for the sound. I confirmed the sound and modem worked.

I am not too familiar with the way Gateway laptop bioses are laid out, but check the BIOS to make sure that pnp OS is enabled if it gatwway an option.
